Moved from Frass. The discussion of whether BugGuide is a online field guide of just the best images or a depository of many images of species from different states at different times of the year showing different activities has never been concluded. We are waiting to see the capabilities of BugGuide 2.0 before moving forward on that discussion. We would suggest that for the present if someone defends an image, that image should be left in the guide. Indiscriminant frassing for reasons other than the ones specified on the frass page just gets people angry. Please do not do so until a large number of BugGuidians agree with such a policy. We're moving this back while we await BugGuide 2.0

Frassed

There are lots of good photos in the guide already, as v belov says, this isn't a depository. I've frassed plenty of photos for this reason, including multiple images of this species.

Yes, but why frass this one, of the many we have?

Three editors (Stephen, Robin and I) have commented on this image that they like the shot. The guide contains many inmages of this species that are less appealing. The only reason I can see for frassing this is that it does not include the date (perhaps the contributor can add it?). If that is your reason for choosing it, fair enough, but please state as much.

Why frass?

As I said above, this is a very nice shot. Please be more specific in your reasons for suggesting frassing. It is the editors who have to do the work you suggest, and as evidenced in many discussions in forums, frassing is a sensitive issue. My inbox is currently filling up with dozens of emails generated by these frass suggestions, and I would appreciate if you spent a little more time justifying them.

i think one page per species is by far enough

people can keep their nice photos in their own galleries, the guide must be a guide, not a depository. i would never suggest to frass the most horrible picture of an interesting insect

This is a discussion that belongs in Forums

if you search comments on Frassing you will see it has been widely discussed in the past. I doubt many users or editors would agree that one image page per species is sufficient, though.

i leave comments which reflect my opinion. what's wrong with that? whoever doesn't want to frass for whatever reason is free to disregard the comment, just like i feel free to leave it.

You are certainly free to leave comments

but as I mentioned above, in order for your comments to be helpful to others, I would like to see them include your reasons to suggest frassing. Otherwise you might as well go through saying "this picture is useless" which would be just about as helpful. If your main reason to suggest frassing is that there are too many images in the guide, however, then that is a topic for Forums.

Wheel Bugs

Haley, enjoyed looking at the other view of the adult on your website. Didn't see the nymph photos, are they posted there? It would be good to have more of them on the BugGuide site. These are hard to photograph to show all the features.

Love your website, by the way. I really like the insect thumbnail page. I like how you have tall slender thumbnails that don't give everything away until you click on them.

Thanks much Stephen. I don't have very many photos on my site b/c I never get around to updating it. I'm working on redesigning it now, so hopefully I'll have more on there soon.

I'm so jealous of your dragons. I go nuts trying to find them around here (and trying to get them to sit still for me).
