No Common Name Tiger Beetle -
Cicindela ancocisconensis
Randolph County, West Virginia, USA
June 29, 2004
Surely a beetle this pretty deserves a common name. Can anyone translate ancocisconensis?
Along a sandy stretch of river in Monongahela National Forest.

Boulder Beach Tiger Beetle?
There's a reference to this species as "Boulder Beach Tiger Beetle"
here
. and
here
. This might be the "official" name.

Boulder Beach
I wonder if that common name comes from Boulder Beach State Park in Vermont. Doesn't seem a very good description of their habitat. They like sand and maybe cobbles, but I would think they were indifferent to boulders...
Thanks, Joel!

Nice Shots!
Nice stuff Stephen,
I can see why people can get so excited about Tiger Beetles, they are neat little critters!
