Sphinx Moth - Hemaris gracilis

Sphinx Moth - Hemaris gracilis
Elysburg, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA
May 21, 2013
Found this in my archives. Hemaris thysbe?

Moved- Hemaris gracilis
Moved from ID Request.

Excellent find. This is not the common H. thysbe, but the much more localized (in PA) H. gracilis. While H. gracilis is known from various localities in PA, these locales are few and far between. I am not sure if it has been recently recorded from Northumberland Co., but I would expect it there.

The red legs are a diagnostic feature of H. gracilis though the presence of a similarly colored stripe on the side of the thorax is the best feature. However, I can say with some certainty that this is indeed H. gracilis, and an important locality.

Thank You!
Thanks much Ryan! I was confused by the one white stripe at the abdomen. Thought at first it might be a variation of the Nessus. Thanks for the great info!
