Calathus sp.
Moved from Woodland Ground Beetles to new genus page based on identification in comments below.

Calathus melanocephalus not in California
Calathus melanocephalus is a Palaearctic species whose only reported occurrence in North America is New York as "introduced but probably not established" per Bousquet & Larochelle, 1993. Westernmost range is Iceland.

Hi Paolo!

Nice you confirmed Calathus! I am reserved concerning your species ID., however. C.melanocephalus is smaller (attaining 8.5 mm body length), and clearly bicoulored (almost black, only pronotum reddish) - not fully coloured specimens should have disappeared so late in the year.

I support this opinion
Hi Paolo,

please check the character pointed out by Pierre-Marc. If it proves right, my congratulations - you produced a new genus for bugguide!

regards, Boris

The Tarsal Claw
I tried very hard to take the picture while the beetle was moving. Would you confirm that it's a pactinate tarsal claw? Thanks!!
Paolo

Yes
Yes, it is pectinate. So, genus Calathus confirmed.

Will try
I'll look for the characteristic Pierre-Marc had pointed out and will let you and him know. I'm away from the lab at the moment. Thanks for the congrads in advance. I have posted another species for ID. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Paolo

Calathus ?
It look like a Calathus sp. to me. But I'm not sure; is the tarsal claw pectinate ? If so, Calathus is good, else, I'm wrong.

Will try
I'll look for the characteristic when I'm back in lab at school. I have posted another species for ID. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
