I'm stumped on this one... - Scudderia furcata
Eugene, Oregon, USA
May 14, 2003
This little guy (immature orthopteran?) was moving very slowly around a rose bush in my back yard. Total length is about 1". I have more pics if needed. Good luck!

You guessed it
That's an immature katydid.

Thanks! Another question...
Any idea of genus and species?

Fork-tailed bush katydid
I grew up in Oregon, and I know the only arboreal katydid species west of the Cascades is the fork-tailed bush katydid, Scudderia furcata. Supposedly there are now angular-winged katydids that have been introduced (Microcentrum sp.), but the proportions are different.

Thanks, Eric.
I looked for photos of Scudderia furcata online and found only adults. But I'll take your word for it!

Thanks again.

Nope!
Often, the only way to know for sure is to rear it to an adult. It might be distinctive, but it's difficult to find any sources that offer details or keys on immatures.

A good guess would be whatever katydids you frequently find in your yard :).

Good point...
I don't find many katydids in my yard. I remember only a couple, and they were the all-green ones. Sure would be an amazing transformation to get from this fella's coloring to plain green!

Thanks again.
