Unknown larva - Olophrum obtectum

Unknown larva - Olophrum obtectum
Deane, Letcher County, Kentucky, USA
March 15, 2014
Size: 5-6mm
I opened the container today, and this is what I found!
Their were two of the larva in the container and this is the only one that there was when I opened it today. The shell of the other one is there but it has been torn apart. Would this one have eaten it? It looks very chubby.

Moved to Olophrum obtectum. Yes, the pale thing in the photo is the pupal exuviae (shed skin) from which the pale adult emerged. At this stage the adult is called "teneral" meaning that it hasn't yet fully darkened and hardened its cuticle. This is why it's so much lighter in color than the ones in some other photos.
And yes, this one very likely ate the other one that seems to have disappeared - larvae and adults are predaceous, as far as known.

bad angle... best guess, Omaliinae

Something like Phyllodrepa?
As for your mystery: I think what you call larva is actually already a pupa. The brown individual is a beetle that emerged from the pupa, leaving the torn pupal skin behind. It should happen to the other one as well. It's the end of the metamorphosis and the beginning of the adult life of a Rove Beetle.

Thanks
But the other one must have got eaten. The skin was all torn up and no Beetle anywhere to be found. The container is just a small 2 inch by 2 inch container with a snap on lid. It just had a few pieces of dirt and a little scrap of moss, nothing it could get lost in. I emptied it out and it is not anywhere to be found.
