Snipe Fly - Chrysopilus quadratus - male

Snipe Fly - Chrysopilus quadratus - Male
Port Franks, Ontario, Canada
July 5, 2004
Relatively speaking, this is a big-headed fly but is it a Big-headed Fly (Pipunculidae)? On low shrubs beside a river; body length about 5 mm. Anyone recoginize the genus/species?
(update: after reading Paul's posting, I removed the former title of "big-headed fly" to avoid confusion with Pipunculidae)

Thanks, Tom
Image moved from Chrysopilus to new species page.

looks like
C. quadratus pictured in Marshall's book (1). An all black fly with the huge red eyes, and the black patches in the wings match what's in the book.

Rhagionidae: Chrysopilus sp.
Rhagionidae: Chrysopilus sp.

Thanks
for the confirmation; image moved from family page to genus page

Snipe fly
It is a snipe fly, family Rhagionidae, and I suspect genus Chrysopilus. Several pictures are in the guide.

Snipe Fly
Thanks, Paul. That tapered abdomen had me feeling leery - and baffled; I see now on Cedar Creek's site a photo labeled "Chrysopilus quadratus?" whose large & small wing patches are similar to those in my photo, and the inconspicuous tail banding looks good too.

Yes, perhaps
The Dedar Creek specimen is paler over all (both the wing marking and the body colour) but it could well be that that pinned specimen has been exposed to light. So, yes, could well be quadratus.
