late Spiny Oak-Slug Moth - Euclea delphinii
Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
October 2, 2006
Near the northern limit of its range here, and two months later than the "May-Aug" given in Covell's Guide.

The southern Euclea nanina (1, 2, 3) is very similar to Euclea delphinii, and I don't know how or whether the two species can be distinguished by external appearance. It's possible that some of the Euclea photos from Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi currently IDed as delphinii in the Guide are actually nanina, and it seems more likely that the photos from Texas are nanina, as that is the only Euclea species listed on these two pages from Texas (1, 2). I think it would be safer to move them to the genus page for now.

Thanks for trying again to get us
more information on this genus. It will be great if and when we finally get them sorted. We do find that , , and look like the images of nanina that we can find online, but that's not a taxonomic decision, just merely a gestalt gut response. You're probably right to move the ones we're uncertain of to the genus level. Guess we just wish we could be sure enough of some to generate a nanina page. But wishes ain't science! :(
