Small Mayfly - Callibaetis - female

Small Mayfly - Callibaetis - Female
Martin County, Florida, USA
November 25, 2004
These very small (10-12 mm) mayflies were abundant this time of year. Note the lack of hindwings, which leads me to think this is a species from the family Baetidae.

According the USGS site Mayflies of United States there are only 2 species from the family Baetidae recorded in Martin County: Callibaetis floridanus and Pseudocloeon ephippiatum.

This photo was taken at the Seabranch Preserve State Park.

Callibaetis
Only two species of this genus are recorded from Florida: C. floridanus and C. pretiosus. Although the males can be very difficult to distinguish, the females are readily separable. This is C. pretiosus. The undulate posterior border of the dark vitta of the forewing and more numerous cross veins (when compared to females of floridanus) are typical of the female imagos. Although very faint, there is also some darkening of the 7th abdominal segment, which is another trait of this species.

Callibaetis
Looks to be a female imago. One of the characteristics of adult Callibaetis is that the small "brown" spot marks on the body and abdomen are in depressions rather than on the level surface.
