mud creature - Reduvius personatus

mud creature - Reduvius personatus
Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
July 17, 2004
About 7-8 mm long, this "Creature from the Brown Lagoon" was found eating a sowbug on our house wall. I later discovered it was the nymph of Reduvius personatus, the adult of which is shown here. The nymph "masks" itself with sand, dirt, etc. in an attempt to remain inconspicuous to prey, hence the common name, Masked Hunter.

Mystery solved
I saw one of these on the floor of my shed in Utah a couple of years ago and thought it was some creature that had evolved from the 1950's radiation era (a piece of dirt with legs). I looked everywhere for a photo of anything like it and never found one. Soooo glad to know what it is and that I don't have to be afraid of it living in my shed.

mascked hunter nymph
Wow can't believe I found this creature on here. I saw this guy in a basement window 9/2/06 in Menomonie, WI but had no clue where to even begin looking. Even my best friend who can identify to at least close proximity almost anything, wouldn't even try. Now the mystery is solved. Very thankful I stmbled across this picture!!!! Bugguide is awesome, totally love this site. Thank you to all who make it what it is!!!!!

Incredible
That's a new one for me. Sharp eye!

Fantastic! It would be inter
Fantastic! It would be interesting to know what the nymph looks like under all that mud. At least we get a peek in the other photo you posted. This one is going to give me nightmares.
