Apystomyia elinguis - male

Apystomyia elinguis - Male
Sheep Creek Canyon, outside Wrightwood, San Benardino County, California, USA
May 27, 2005
A male of the rare and enigmatic Apystomyia elinguis. Presently placed in Hilarimorphidae, but likely belongs to a separate family. Sorry, image is a little washed out.

Thanks for the early Christmas present!
After marching round the internet in a sort of taxonomic musical chairs, I finally settled on Apystomyiidae.

It's not often we can add a unique taxon like this to the guide, and this one comes with an expert ID- so what if it's not a perfect shot (it's better than most of mine).

Oh, and welcome to BugGuide!
