Owlfly - Ascaloptynx appendiculata

Owlfly - Ascaloptynx appendiculata
Ohoopee Dunes Natural Area, Emanuel County, Georgia, USA
June 2, 2004
Patrick asked me to post this image to use on page 4136, it's an Ascaloptynx appendiculatus owlfly. In flight, it reminded me of a large teneral damselfly, with a really floppy flight.

#9091 Identification -- Ascaloptynx appendiculata
This is an adult of the owlfly Ascaloptynx appendiculata (Fabricius, 1793) [not "appendiculatus"]. For accounts of the biology of this species (as Ascaloptynx furciger) see Bibliography of the Neuropterida (http://insects.tamu.edu/research/neuropterida/neur_bibliography/bibhome.html) reference numbers (r#) 2875 and 2877.

Thanks, Giff!
Thanks, that is lovely--now we have both genera of owlflies illustrated here. You can really see the dark leading edge to the wings on the photo. This was prominent on the one (dead) invididual I've found here in Durham as well. Ululodes quadrimaculatus has unmarked leading edges, in my experience. If one looks closely, too, one can see that the eyes do not have the prominent groove of Ululodes.

The June date is perhaps significant as well. My one record of Ascaloptynx species from Durham for 2004 was June 7. Ululodes seems to fly a bit later in the year, starting in June, but more becoming more common in July.

(I've moved this to the guide page.)
