Wings with vein Sc incomplete (but R1 appears to swollen at the point of the subcostal break), humeral costal break absent, subcostal break present, cell cup present, head with 1 pair of orbital setae, postocellar setae usually absent, but if present, divergent, no distinct vibrissa developed, tibiae without dorsal preapical setae.
Anomalochaeta guttipennis: boreal, postocellar setae present, wings mostly dark with ~10 round hyaline spots
Geomyza: widespread, no postocellar setae, wings narrow, disc of scutellum bare, with shortened pair of basal setae
Opomyza: widespread, no postocellar setae, wings normal, disc of scutellum setulose, basal and apical scutellar setae subequal

adults on grass in moist areas; larvae probably stem borers
