Soft-winged Flower Beetle? - Anthocomus bipunctatus

Soft-winged Flower Beetle? - Anthocomus bipunctatus
Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
June 7, 2004
Not sure whether this is Melyridae but it's superficially similar to the previous post. On underside of elderberry leaf beside our house at night; body length 4 mm. Hoping for a better photo next year with a close-up lense and/or better camera.

Melyridae: Anthocomus bipunctatus
An introduced European species.

A. bipunctatus
Thanks, Donald. Image moved from family page to species page.
I find the name and placement of this species to be confusing (see info I added to the species page)

Melyridae
You are correct (ding-ding-ding:-). This is probably an Anthocomus sp. They can be found with some consistency around aphid colonies.

Melyridae
Thanks for the confirmation, Eric. I entered "Melyridae" on the Ontario species page and got 10 results (4 Malachius species, 3 Collops, 2 Attalus, 1 Dolichosoma). But Ontario's database is currently missing entire groups (e.g. hemiptera, diptera other than robber flies) so I have to wonder how complete the rest of the list is.

NHIC list
I think Ontario's NHIC lists for beetles are taken from the Checklist of the Beetles of Canada and Alaska which is online here. It appears to have Anthocomus synonymized with Malachius, but it also says the taxonomy for this family is poor.

Thanks for the info and that link, Joel.
