Picnic Beetle - Glischrochilus fasciatus

Picnic Beetle - Glischrochilus fasciatus
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
January 8, 2006
Size: 6 mm
Found in my compost bin, where there is a lot of rotting fruit. Captured and posed, length measured. This is a first for the guide outside of New England for this species.
It has been unseasonably warm the last week in North Carolina, and there is more insect activity than usual. I have even heard tree crickets singing--I would have thought they all died, since we had several hard frosts in December, 2006.
