Mother-lode of tufted millipedes - Polyxenus lagurus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA

Size: 0.75 - 3 mm approx.
Baby. Note how relatively few segments the juveniles have. They must molt as they grow. Maybe they add a segment with each molt. Does anybody know?

They do add segments
When I had my pet millipede, I did some reading about it and until adulthood, they usually add a segment. In the case of mine, (Tanzanian Red-legged Millipede), anyway, the males on their last segment-making molt, will be missing 1 set of legs which are replaced by "gonopods", aiding in identifying if it's a male or female...It's easier with that species, though, because the males are shiny and the females aren't.
I am only going by memory, though...my memory isn't always the best.

I wondered where that handle came from. Now I know:-) And I also know now that what I suspected about segment adding is so.
