These were on and eating water lily leaves. There were quite a few of these in the pond...probably 12+...and it's a small pond.

Checking by hostplant, I found a caterpillar that eats Water Lilies and other water plants on this page that looks vaguely similar

 
Not parapoynx...
..because it is aquatic and my caterpillar was above any water and on the plant leaves themselves. But thanks for the guess.
