The Soldier Flies or Stratiomyidae of California
By James, M. T.
University of California Press, 1960
This work is available for download as a PDF file by clicking this link. Technical, but (with patience and perseverance) helpful for working on California Stratiomyidae. Some comments: [list]
  • There are keys to California genera and species...presumably complete as known and recognized by the author in 1960. (And modulo errors(?): e.g. the genus Euparyphus appears in couplet 16 of the key to genera, but I could not find the genus discussion or key to species anywhere within the PDF).
  • The PDF linked to above is missing pages 119 and 120 (which apparently contain various figures/plates).

Out of print. This volume includes: corrections to Volume 1; keys to genera for all Schizophoran flies, e.g. Aschiza, Acalyptratae, and Calyptratae.

Manual of Neactic Diptera Volume 1
By Varies for each chapter; edited by J.F. McAlpine, B.V. Petersen, G.E. Shewell, H.J. Teskey, J.R. Vockeroth, D.M. Wood.
    Research Branch Agriculture Canada, 1981
Out of print. This volume includes: introduction; chapters on morphological terms for adults and larva; keys to family for adults and larvae; keys to genera for all non-Schizophoran flies, e.g. "Nematocera", "Orthorrhapha," and Empidoidea.

A Catalog of the Diptera of America North of Mexico
    By Alan Stone, et al.
United States Department of Agriculture, 1965
Nomenclature is dated, of course. One nice feature is range information.

The Flies of Western North America
By Frank R. Cole and Evert I. Schlinger
    University of California Press, 1968
Although out of print, and in some respects out of date, I have consulted this tome numerous times where I had nothing else available. It has been a very valuable resource.
Since this book is out of print, the Amazon link doesn't seem to work. See here for internet availability: 1.

Fourth edition; previous editions dated 1978, 1984, 1996.

Scanned version of third edition available on Google books (missing some pages).
