Male yellow jacket
Vespula sp., maybe V. vidua. Yellow jackets are boreal-temperate, so actually there are more possibilities up north than there are down south:-) We know it is a male by the long body, long antennae, late date.

Thanks, Eric. I hadn't (and haven't) seen a dorsal photo of V. vidua but a few minutes ago came upon drawings half-way down this page and vidua looks like a good candidate.
