Sizeable Grasshopper - Schistocerca nitens - female

Sizeable Grasshopper - Schistocerca nitens - Female
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
January 10, 2007
Size: 3"
I actually measured this one - with a folded $1 bill. That shows how afraid it was of me. Which is also why I don't have the foggiest idea of wing color. It scornfully half-hopped away when I tried to encourage flight. Oh well, I did get the famed Drumstick photo for Eric. (That was easy because the other leg didn't obstruct my view.)

Bird Grasshopper
It looks like the Gray Bird Grasshopper to me. Compare with these.

That's it. Thanks, Lynette.
I've shot these before. Maybe next time I'll recognize one; they're the biggest ones around here, even if frequently not gray.
