Please I.D. me - Allograpta obliqua
Mathews County, Virginia, USA
January 7, 2007
This insect was on a blooming heather bush on a particularly warm day last week. I am not an expert on yellowjackets, flies, bees, etc. and am not sure what it is. It was quite small, maybe 1 and 1/2 centimeters or smaller. Thank you for any help.

Sorry it is Allograpta obliqu
Sorry it is Allograpta obliqua, they are much smaller than Scaeva and Scaeva has only one pair of marks on each segment, while this one here has 2 pairs on each segment...

Oops, should have looked at the other view.
Thanks for the correction, Martin. I got too wrapped up in color and never saw a dark A. obliqua.

Yep, syrphid. I think it's Scaeva pyrastri

Fly
Looks like a Syrphid Fly. Beyond that, I can't help sorry.
