small white-faced fly - Metopia

small white-faced fly - Metopia
London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
June 19, 2004
Size: about 4 mm
Presumably common and/or well known, as it was found in the back yard of a suburban home.

Update 24 May 2006: I originally guessed this was a tachinid; thanks to Paul and Norm for correcting me.

Sarcophagidae: Miltogrammina
Sarcophagidae: Miltogramminae: Metopia sp.

Metopia species
Thanks again for narrowing this one down to genus, which, as Paul had suggested, belongs to Sarcophagidae. Image moved from Tachinidae page to new genus page.

Please, ...
... take into account that there are many species of the sarcophagid subfamily Miltogramminae that also have white faces. These are nearly all nest parasitoids of sphecid wasps and the like. You may have to check those out as well.

Paul
