Very small ants - Forelius pruinosus

Very small ants - Forelius pruinosus
Wimberley, Hays County, Texas, USA
May 23, 2014
Size: 2.3mm
These tiny ants apparently nest in cracks in the sidewalk at a rural residence six miles west of Wimberley, Texas. They travel along trails on the pavement into fissures leaving no evidence of the excavation. There's much variation in the coloration of the gaster. They don't seem to have stingers. It's amazing how much foot traffic and watering they endure. After years of seeing few species of ants other than fire ants they're an interesting change.
