I am basing my identification of the larger ants on some comments by a few visiting ant researchers (mainly Gary Umphrey and his colleagues) and what I was able to skim from books and Google while filling in the Guide page for this species. I have no idea what the smaller ants are, against which the harvesters were defending their nest entrance.
