Uknown Beautiful Moth - Dryocampa rubicunda

Uknown Beautiful Moth - Dryocampa rubicunda
Mid-Coast, Maine, USA
December 26, 2004
This beauty seems to show up at our porch light every other year. They also only show up when the Black Eyed Susans are in bloom. I've also seen them on the Black Eyed Susan flower. I've never seen them on any other flower or plant. Please let me know what they are called. I've been calling them the Black Eyed Susan Moths (for obvious reasons). Thanks, Leslie Sullivan PS. I'm also sending a side and bottom image of this moth.

Rosy Maple Moth
It sure is a beauty. This is one of the silk moths, Dryocampa rubicunda (family Saturniidae). Its larvae feed on maples and sometimes oaks. See more photos here and info on biology here.

thanks
Thank you Robin!
I've enjoyed looking at these moths for years now and always wondered what they were, and you let me know in a matter of minutes. You know your moths! Thanks again!
Leslie
