Masked Chafer - Cyclocephala

Masked Chafer - Cyclocephala
Rancho Bernardo, San Diego County, California, USA
July 13, 2003
Size: 12 mm
This beetle came to a blacklight in my front yard in a suburban neighborhood. They are very abundant at this time of year and bump into the windows at night constantly. They are typically about 1.5 cm long.

Dynastinae, Cyclocephalini, Cyclophala
The tribe is Cyclocephalini. Dynastini are the big rhino beetles like Megasoma, Dyanstes, and Golofa. They are all in the subfamily Dynastinae though.

Masked chafer
Cool! Believe it or not, I think this little guy is in the Dynastini tribe of scarabs. The genus is Cyclocephala. They can be really abundant, especially back east, cruising over lawns after dark. The grubs can be sod pests if they reach high enough densities (pretty rarely).
