Syrphid Fly - Platycheirus - male

Syrphid Fly - Platycheirus - Male
Stratton Place, Dacula, Georgia, USA

Platycheirus obscurus looks good to me.

Platycheirus sp.
Hello Troy,
This is a male (touching eyes) syrphid from the subfamily Syrphini, and two ideas popped up from looking at the picture: One is Platycheirus sp., and the other is Melangyna sp.
Platycheirus males have in general very distinct front legs which are broadened and often with rows of bristles or hairs.
This one seems to have normal legs, so one would say it isn't Platycheirus! But, of course, there are some of the 64 species present in the USA with normal legs.
And what I can see of the face and head I still think it is a species of Platycheirus, because with Melangyna the face in between antennae and mouth rim is more hollow. In this picture it is clearly bulging out!
And last but not least it is also the form and color of the abdominal markings that point out to Platycheirus I think.
So, my idea: a male of Platycheirus sp.! :-))
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards
