Ice bugs - Paederus

Ice bugs - Paederus
Ppond Creek Bottoms, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
January 19, 2007
Found these at the edge of freezing flood waters. Are these two seperate species or adults and nymphs of one?

ice bugs
Hi Steve,

the small ones are springtails (Collembola), the pretty ones are rove beetles of the genus Paederus, the so-called whiplash beetle. Their blood is toxic, and name describes what they do to your skin if you smash them . . .

cheers, Boris
