Strange galls on leaf petioles of Carya (hickory) - - Phylloxera caryaecaulis

Strange galls on leaf petioles of Carya (hickory) - - Phylloxera caryaecaulis
Skillman, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
May 30, 2014
Size: 10-20 mm in diameter
These are really common on two of the hickory trees along our road this year, but I have never seen them before. They are situated on the petioles on the divided leaves, and the leaves or leaflets turn black and then die and fall off. The petioles also bend at strange angles. A few of them have holes where the animal has hatched, but most seem to be still developing.
