unusual sphingid moth - Prionoxystus robiniae

unusual sphingid moth - Prionoxystus robiniae
Mars Hill, Madison County, North Carolina, USA
June 16, 2014
Size: wing span = 88 mm
This is a very large moth (88 mm wing span; 48 mm TL) that I think is a sphingid, but the patterning doesn't match any species that I have seen. I am including a second image that shows the back wings and abdomen (dark with no spotting).
