Some species of Heteropogon have orange on the top of the abdomen like this, but I didn't see any exact matches.

remarkably like an Adrenosoma. But I am not sure in CA.

Pretty sure you nailed it. If we believe BG's declaration that there are 6 species in North America, 4 of which are tropical and only make it into TX and FL, the remaining two in CA are Andrenosoma fulvicaudum and Andrenosoma hesperium, and the latter has orange legs and a much more orange abdomen, so I think it has to be Andrenosoma fulvicaudum.

I have had this genus land on my leg in Costa Rica. There are four in TX and most of our photos are from there and AZ. They are fast and active robbers and enjoy downed wood like the Laphria.
