dagger caterpillar - Acronicta radcliffei

Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA

found on what I believe is cherry. Is this a cherry dagger instar, or Radcliffe's?

unfortunately, no
After the caterpillar molted, I watched it over several days as it fed on the same branch and grew longer. There was another earlier instar caterpillar in the same tree on a nearby branch. Unfortunately they both disappeared within ~4 days of this one's molting.

I had seen a cherry dagger in the same tree in 2011 so thought it was probably the same species. I was a little surprised when it turned out different!

Acronicta
The head patterning looks more like A. hasta than A. radcliffei.

thanks
Thanks... that was my hunch. I'll keep an eye on it as it's in the backyard. It's now resting on a silk mat (molting mat?) in the middle of a leaf
