Carolina Grasshopper - Dissosteira carolina

Carolina Grasshopper - Dissosteira carolina
5200 ft elevation, Park County, Wyoming, USA
August 27, 2004
Size: 3 inch
In the dry hills of Wyoming. It took me awhile to catch up with it.

Location
Can you verify the location? It says Colorado but your description lists Wyoming.

Location is Wyoming
Oops. I do not know how Colorado got in there. The location is Park County Wyoming, in the North West area 50 miles east of Yellowstone.

Data Conversion
I think I know what happened. You probably listed it as Park Co., and our location algorithm turned the Co. into Colorado. You may want to spot check your other images to make sure there are no errors. I'll fix the ones I find.

Thanks
I updated the data.

Grasshopper
I believe this is a Dissosteira carolina, or a Carolina grasshopper. I've also heard it called a "road duster", since it seems to like dry dusty areas such as roads. You can find some more information on it here.

Carolina grasshopper
I agree with David. The single notch on the pronotal ridge (top of thorax), leaves Spharagemon as the only other common option, but they are more boldly patterned, with usually reddish hind tibia. Not so on this specimen.
