Strange...same exact photo posted on iNat from North Carolina!
Hi Ken. I recently became interested in & started studying this species after photographing it in Henry Cowell St Park near Santa Cruz. I was puzzled by recent synonymies (i.e. from 1990's) suggesting it was introduced into CA from Europe (because the back-story seemed odd...see "Remarks" on info page). So I became interested in its distribution.
I found recent catalogs that indicate there are two species currently recognized & recorded from the Neartic (e.g.
here
and
here
)...namely
D. livens
known only from CA; and
D. seminole
known only from FL. So I thought I'd study the iNat posts from elsewhere to see if I could tell whether they were mis-ID's or potential range extensions.
While doing so I was struck by a
post by "forestscout" from South Carolina
that looked like a real good match for
D. livens
. Only later did I realize it appears to be the same exact photo as yours posted here!
