Carolina Grasshopper - Dissosteira carolina

Carolina Grasshopper - Dissosteira carolina
Frank Shoemaker Marsh -- North side of Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, USA
July 4, 2014
Size: Approx 2 inches
Sitting on bare dirt road in the prairie. I'm thinking this is a late season Speckle-winged Grasshopper -- Arphia conspersa.

It is actually a Carolina Grasshopper
Dissosteira carolina

There is some resemblance to an Arphia, but the body is longer and more slender (and the wings much longer). The cut in the ridge on the pronotum is at a diagonal instead of vertical (or missing). Also, when this one flew, you would have seen black wings intstead of orange or yellow.

It is indeed late for Arphia conspersa, but it's not impossible to see them this late (though it would be more likely in a cooler climate than Lincoln).

Moved from Grasshoppers, Crickets, Katydids.

Thanks

This reminds me of Dissosteira.
