Beats Me - Aeolothrips

Beats Me - Aeolothrips
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
February 11, 2007
Size: ~6mm; thin
Totally can't figure this one out. Looked like a thri*ps at first and was similarly sized. Unless this turns out to be something wonderful, I'll frass it. Meanwhile, curiosity runs rampant.

Aeolothrips spp.
I don't know anything, but I like the word THRIPS and it looked so interesting I tried my best to find out! I couldn't find any banded ones in the Bug Guide yet. It does look like this picture from UC Davis. Also resembles this other species: picture on Hungarian website. I like the way the antennae are also banded!

Thanks, joot, that's it.
Aeolothrips is also shown in the new Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America. Thanks, too, for pointing out the banded antennae, which I'd missed but do appreciate. Hope to get a better photo someday.

It IS a thrips.
It is indeed a thrips. Can probably easily get to a family, if not a genus, as there are relatively few with wings banded like this. I believe it is the family with the predatory species.

Huh. Thanks, Eric.
It did look and act like a hunter. I didn't realize those were banded wings, thinking them to be the body of a possible wingless critter.

6mm or 0.6mm
?

The photos are that bad, huh?
More like 6mm. I shoot about 99% in the field and, lacking incredible luck, couldn't get anything in the >1mm range.

Okay, it's a giant among thrips then.
It certainly looked like one but I was unaware they could get so large. Maybe it's the high-protien diet.
