Adult female - Latrodectus hesperus - Female
Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
July 11, 2014
Size: ~12mm body length
Found under a rock. An easy way to get these spiders to settle down is to let them climb on a forked stick. When they get bored of moving back and forth and try to drop down, spin the stick around so that their safety line is stretched across the fork. Repeat a few times until they have a small web going right on the stick. After a few minutes, they should stop wandering around and sit in the middle of it for quite a while.
