2nd instar - Phidippus putnami

2nd instar - Phidippus putnami
Ohio, USA
Size: about 2.35mm
All five 1st instar spiderlings molted to 2nd instar on January 18, 2007.
They were first observed outside the nest on January 28, and by January 30 they were all moved to individual containers and maintained with a steady supply of water (moist cottonball) and no more than three flightless D. melanogaster at all times.

I'm not sure when their first feeding occurred, but they were observed actively catching and eating prey by February 14.

These "2nd instar" photos were taken on February 17.

Scale bar is .5mm. Four exposures stacked in Helicon Focus Pro.

(edit) I should point out that the 1st and 2nd instar photos in this series are probably not of the same specimen. And even though they are now in individual containers (and have unique personal catalog numbers) I don't plan to split this series up until important differences can be observed between them. If anyone has a problem with this, please let me know.
