Bugging Me - Neoclytus acuminatus

Bugging Me - Neoclytus acuminatus
Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
February 19, 2007
Size: Approximately 1/2"
I found this flying insect in my family room at about 4:00pm. It has four yellow stripes, six legs, wings and antennas, there were three of them. I found one about three days before also in the family room. The room is a one story w/ hardwood floors, plywood underlayment with a mud crawl space. Built with 2x4's, flat rubber rolled roof. I also have a fireplace in the room. However, the insects were found at the other end on the sliding patio door glass.

Neoclytus acuminatus (Red Horned Beatle)
Thanks for the info; I have recently brought in some firewood. Do I have to worry about them burrowing into the wood structure of my home?
If so, I will be more careful not to leave unused firewood inside.

No worries
If a male and female of this species emerged and mated, the female would look for a hardwood branch or log covered with bark to lay her eggs on. Since practically all framing in homes is made of spruce, pine, or fir, it would come nowhere close to being acceptable to mama beetle. (Some huge longhorned borers are not as picky, but they would need the wood to be fairly moist.)

Thank you!
Jim,
Thank you for the info, you have been very helpful.

Neoclytus acuminatus or Redheaded Ash Borer

Longhorned beetle
This is a red-headed ash borer, Neoclytus acuminatus. Family Cerambycidae, the long-horned beetles. If you brought in some wood recently, they probably emerged from that and were attracted to the light coming through the glass.
They are perfectly harmless by the way.
