Explanation of Names

Author is Bigot, 1892. Species name aterrimus is Latin, meaning ink-like in colour, i.e., black (Dictionary of Entomology).

Only widespread eastern Anthrax with dark, unpatterned wings--see comments here:

Range

Widespread in east: Connecticut to Florida, west to Arkanasas, Louisiana.
