Kept flying small circles, then returning to perch on the the same small conifers and plants of Polygonum newberryi. Male on patrol? Sorry for the cruddy images?

yes. Papilio polyxenes
They're similar to P. oregonius, but darker and not as broad-winged. Also, P. oregonius is found in drier habitat, east of the Cascades.

Sorry for my confusion - I thought P. polyxenes was the Black Swallowtail, while the Anise is P. zelicaon? Which one do you think it is?
