Horned Passalus--antenna - Odontotaenius disjunctus - male

Horned Passalus--antenna - Odontotaenius disjunctus - Male
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
January 15, 2007
Size: 37 mm
Ventral view of the left antenna, which is about 7 mm long if straightened out. I can see 10 segments, a family characteristic. Distinctive details of antennae:
  • antennae in this family have a 3-segmented club
  • lamellae (plate-like segments) cannot be closed, like those of the Scarabaeidae and related families, resembling antennae of stag beetles, Lucanidae
  • antennae are not elbowed (geniculate) like those of the Lucanidae, but there is a slight bend
