Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
July 29, 2014
Size: 1-1.5 inches body length
Small butterfly with large eyes that made a fairly loud buzzing sound as it flew by. Light brown in color with white wing markings. Photo shows a long proboscis extended out toward a leaf. It stayed motionless for a long time. It also landed on a purple penta flower but did not stay there long.

Possibly Calpodes ethlius - Brazilian Skipper
Not an expert, but compare:

Also known as Canna Leaf Roller

Looks like a pretty good match!
Thanks Monica. This actually matches better than the Cloud or Lirius Skippers. The coloring and spots and the white around the eye looks right. Maybe an expert will stop by and confirm that it's a Brazilian.

a skipper
It's a skipper, which are butterflies but are kind of their own unique superfamily.

An expert might be able to narrow it down more for you!

Lerema accius or Lerema lirius?
Thanks for the info Molly! I thought it was a moth of some sort. I was not familiar with Skippers. Perhaps someone can tell whether it is a Clouded Skipper or the other type - the lirius.
