Okanagana rimosa, a cicada at Tower Lake, Hanwell, New Brunswick - Okanagana rimosa - male

Okanagana rimosa, a cicada at Tower Lake, Hanwell, New Brunswick - Okanagana rimosa - Male
Tower Lake bog, Hanwell, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
July 25, 2014
I believe this is CICADIDAE Tettigadinae: Okanagana rimosa, and it certainly shows more orange marking than the similar, and also expected (in NB), Okanagana canadensis. There are three cicada species in the Maritime Provinces, the other being the common Dogday Cicada, Tibicen canicularis. There was a second male singing nearby in the bog.

Denis Doucet also found this species in Kouchbouguac NP in July of 2011, and there is a good discussion on BugGuide HERE.

Here is a 78 second video showing the insect on the pine. It - a male - gives two short songs, then a long one, HERE: http://youtu.be/yZtR-jvAyx8.

Finally, here is a link to the discussion at Birding NB (True Bugs).
