This really is an awesome photo
I've never seen the knobs on the back of the male from this angle. Perhaps he is maneuvering/contracting/expanding his abdomen when this pic was taken -- making the knobs more prominent momentarily.
Also nice that we can see the spermatophore that has already been transferred into the female's oviduct.

According to Nancy's book
"The female sips secretions from a pit (the metanotal gland) on the back of the male which she can reach only when he lifts his wings to sing." See
