strange death grip - Dirrhagofarsus

strange death grip - Dirrhagofarsus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
January 10, 2007
Size: about 6 mm
I thought this was quirky. These eucnemids died off rapidly, probably living a week or less. Eucnemid specialist Jyrki Muona says adults have an incomplete gut and are not known to eat.

Apparently this beetle's angst over its impending doom was taken out on a piece of soft wood, still clutched in its mandibles in rigor mortis.
