Are these velvety tree ants (Liometopum occidentale)? - Liometopum occidentale
Caspers Wilderness Park, San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California, USA
March 3, 2007
If memory serves, Gordon C. Snelling identified one of these for me before, when all I had were frass-grade photos. Well, these are better. Found on top of and under a 4" carpet of live oaks leaves, often on bits of wood, in filtered sunlight. Moved fast when in full sun. (Previous frassed image was on a live sycamore leaf. Sycamores are presently leafless.)
