Explanation of Names
At Words by William Whitaker, "pilosus" translates from latin to "hairy, shaggy, covered with hair".
Identification
With the obvious segmental striae that encircle the body, this millipede is an introduced species of the European family Julidae (Julida).
The long, spiniform epiproct at the caudal end indicates Ophyiulus pilosus (Newport).
Remarks
This millipede is an introduced species of the European family Julidae (Julida). The family Julidae is exclusively Palaearctic, occurring primarily in Europe but also in north Africa and even east Asia; it is represented in North America only by introduced species, all from Europe.
