UI Geometrid Moth - Rheumaptera meadii

UI Geometrid Moth - Rheumaptera meadii
Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
August 9, 2014
On my house siding early this morning before sunrise. We have a small wooded area behind with a variety of trees but mostly oak, birch and pine as well as some blueberry bushes.
If you have the time, a hint or two as to how to narrow this down from Geometrid would be really helpful as I try to learn how to ID on my own. Thanks!

Moved
Moved from Geometrid Moths.

Try
the subfamily Larentiinae :)

Thanks, Kyle.
This seems a likely candidate?

Yep
Looks like it to me!

If you don't mind my asking...
what was it that you saw to put it into that subfamily?

Well,
I immediately recognized it as the barberry geometer, but I didn't want to tell you that because you said you wanted to learn! I honestly didn't know what subfamily it was in - I don't have them memorized, I had to look it up from the species page.

Thanks.
Recognition does narrow things down. :-)

Thanks, Kyle.
I appreciate your help.
