Hymenoptera - Arotes

Hymenoptera - Arotes
Lake of the Ozarks State Park, Camden County, Missouri, USA
June 13, 2006
This was in the woods, but I only got a quick glimpse before it took off. I'm guessing this is Symphyta. Any id help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Donna

Moved
Moved from Ichneumon Wasps. Fairly confident this is a male Arotes.

Moved from Wasps.

We would guess Ichneumon
with that many segented antenna. But there are thousands of species. Eric may be able to tell you more. He's been working on subfamilies and tribes.

Good guess:-)
Yes, it is an ichneumon. Reminds me of a male in the genus Arotes, but they are fairly sizable. No size indication given here.

Thanks
Eric,

Thanks for the id. I just looked at the Arotes page to note the size -- 15 mm or so doesn't seem too far off. I didn't include size information because I'm going on memory here. That's the biggest hazard of not trying to id things immediately. I guess I'll try to be better about working on identifications sooner.

I might also have remembered the constriction between the abdomen and the thorax. I feel like I can't really see that in the photo which sent me off in completely the wrong direction when I tried to figure out what it was.

Thanks again,
Donna
